Simian Mobile Disco - It's the Beat - (Siriusmo remix)
A lovechild of what could be the two biggest dance music scenes in the world - London's own Simian Mobile Disco and Berliner DJ Siriusmo - brings together the best of all worlds. While mixing the synthy electro beats of a more Parisian disco distinction alongside the more mechanical, minimal technical skill of German techno, synergy is operating here at its finest. The Black Lips - Veni Vedi Veci (Diplo Remix)
Every one of Diplo's remixes has a distinct sound - he moves between the realms of the rave, the film score, and the block party with varying degrees of success. Here he leads us to the rock club, where the Black Lips carry words of religion over worldly rhythms and 60's-inspired guitar sounds.
Lightspeed Champion - Waiting Game
Once upon a time (in 2006) there was a band named Test Icicles that blended metal with rap and electro, and somehow the whole thing turned out sounding like punk. However, an unfortunate fate for many a band showing signs of genius, they couldn't stand each other and disbanded after their first album. Arising from the ashes comes their singer's new band, Lightspeed Champion, with their own take on more sunny, harmonious pop melodies; fans of The Anniversary should be able to find themselves relating to their style.
The Teenagers - Starlett Johansson
The Teenagers chirpy second single is an ode to Scarlett Johansson's public statement that she doesn't believe in monogamy. The result is a sound that is cosmically low-fi, reminiscent of the shoe gaze era like Jesus and the Mary Chain. The lyrics sound straight out of an actual teen's private diary (that is, if you were that sure of yourself in High School): You don't believe in monogamy/ I'm not jealous Scarlett, will you marry me/ All you've got, you can like it/ But what I am, you will love it.
New Young Pony Club - Get Lucky (MRSTKRFT Mix)
NYPC end up sounding a lot like U2 on the original version of their song, but Toronto-based producers MSTRKRFT decided to rework it into something a little more edgy. Like the remixes they've usually made their name on - it's not only taken to the next level of dance hedonism, but somehow the song manages to become even more melodic when taking some of the instruments away. They've done wonders for singles by Panthers, Buck 65 and Metric.
